Straight away, Talvar is super-sharp, a sword swipe at Bollywood’s tune and-move, mehendi-fuelled idealism. Motivated by 2008’s Aarushi Talwar twofold murder case, for which Aarushi’s guardians are serving an existence term, Talvar takes reality head on – and turns it on its head.
In flawlessly isolated portions, Talvar presents differentiating perspectives on who murdered Shruti Tandon and Khempal. Is it accurate to say that it was Shruti’s insulted folks? Khempal’s silly companions? Then again did bungled examinations butcher Shruti and Khempal, even after they were killed?
Talvar gets your psyche ticking along the murders’ puzzles while it moves your heart at two lives – and one truth – lost.
The acting is magnificent. Irrfan completely crushes it as Central Department of Investigation (CDI) officer Ashwin Kumar, whose sharp insight, dim silliness and liquefying delicacy towards his wife Reema (glowing Tabu) light up each edge. Irrfan shows whiplash-like control, calmly drawling to an idiotic cop, “Agli baar koi khoon bhara haath chor jaye, toh dhyan dijiyega…” As blundering Inspector Dhaniram, whose apathy stretches out to ignoring a spoiling body, Gajraj Rao presents an immaculate paan-biting foil, rejecting a blood-recolored sheet with, “Tumhari chadar hai, locker mein daal do, hamein kya?”
While the screen crackles in the middle of Irrfan and Gajraj, Konkona and Neeraj play the Tandons as a quieted pair – whose acting changes inconspicuously as killers, then casualties. Neeraj’s eyes talk while with glimmering malice, Konkona murmurs to her spouse, “Chalo, rona shuru karna hai!” The acting’s further charged by frightening Kanhaiya (Sumit Gulati), whose shrewdness adds shades of dark to this hair-raising story.
With layers of truth and falsehoods, TV correspondents yelling, “Yahi hai woh ghar!”, cloudy narco-tests and manipulating office legislative issues, Talvar’s edges are determined, tense representations. Pankaj Kumar catches dusty the suburbs and the pressure of a tight minimal level, intercut with deplorable shots – the merry sparklers of a Delhi baraat – that accentuate the dismalness of the Tandons’ lives. Rigid altering (Sreekar Prasad) is incredible while Vishal Bhardwaj‘s composition frequents, jumbled with truths, humming with hypotheses – yet, oddly stark.
