Gerard Depardieu stars as Lionel Kasdan, an obstinate Parisian analyst whose routines and body mass review Touch of Evil’s Hank Quinlan, albeit dissimilar to the unrelenting Orson Welles character, Kasdan has chosen to discard police work for a comfortable if forlorn retirement. Yet as one of the film’s not really inconspicuous dialogs clarifies, “Malevolence never resigns,” and Kasdan rapidly ends up examining the homicide of his neighborhood ward’s choirmaster, whose body is discovered spread out on the congregation floor, sprinkled with stained glass.
Sign heaps of gothic symbolism and dismal droning, of which there is much in a film that makes developed utilization of Renaissance author Gregorio Allegri’s Miserere, both as temperament actuating music and as an issue plot component whose significance just gets to be clear after you’ve heard it sung around twenty times. In the mean time, Kasdan is soon abetted in his tries by ridiculous sonofabitch Interpol operators Frank Salek (Joeystarr), who crosses his way while following a worldwide youngster servitude racket run by an almighty military builder called “Blackstream” (assumedly on the grounds that the names Blackwater, Blackbriar and Clearstream were all effectively taken).
While huge numbers of the film’s storylines and side characters incite minimal more than eye-moving responses, Depardieu and rapper turned performer Joeystarr (Polisse) figure out how to make for a startlingly pleasant couple, the previous downplaying his scenes as an issue cunning examiner and the last being his typically uncontrollable self, yet with more funniness than regular. It’s as though the two were attempting to have a ton of fun in a motion picture that has a tendency to consider itself far excessively important, and whose source material feels like a mashup of each evildoing plotline of the last half-century.
