The marketing blurb describes The Pigman Murders as “an intense roller-coaster that will bring documentary style to another level.” I agree with that statement in part. It does succeed in evoking empathy for the group of friends and their camaraderie is effecting and believable. They are a far cry from the usual whiny, hysterical irritates that populate, and ruin, the genre. Also the reason for the expedition to the middle of nowhere (it was a trip that their late friend used to love going on) and the point of it being filmed is also plausible, a present to their late friend’s family, rather than the groan-inducing contrivances other flicks of a similar ilk stoop down to.
The location feels raw, exposed, and more importantly, presents an environment that could actually be in the middle of nowhere. Too often, in ’found footage’ flicks it looks like the protagonists are farting about in a couple of trees down the road from their house rather than isolated from society.
Unfortunately The Pigman Murders falters crucially at the climax when it should be capitalising on the build-up. The pig-masked murderers do look sinister but very little menace is invoked. You know that they murder people, you don’t know why and you don’t need to know why, but you never really feel any need to be unnerved or freaked out by them.
Written and directed by feature-film débutante Stephen Patrick Kenny, The Pigman Murders, formerly known as Somebody’s There, is likely played by Mark Hutchinson, Tom Ward, Camille Yourell , Gerard Fallon, Andrew Neenan, Marius Puodziunas, and Eugene Horan. Kenny’s entry into the found footage genre is head and shoulders above the rest. It may fall short of [REC] and The Conspiracy in the scares department but scores highly in creating a believable scenario, likeable protagonists and a decent build-up of tension. If you’re feeling sick of the ‘found footage’ sub-genre this could be the one to restore your faith that not all are vapid cash-in’s with a high irritability factor.
